I
was born, raised and reside in the Irishtown area, of
the Town of Minerva, Essex County, New York. (Adirondack
Mt. area), (approximate Lat 47d 37mN, 73d 57m W)
Following graduation from Minerva Central School in
Olmstedville, New York; I obtained an Associates Degree
in “Electrical Technology” from ATI in Canton, NY.
I was then employed by the `Long Lines Dept.’ of AT&T
and worked at the Hallihan Hill Facility in Kingston NY.
While in their employ I obtained a 2nd Class Radio
Operator License and also received a FBI clearance for
radio maintence of government communications. It was at
this time I was called into active military service and
was sent to Ft. Belvoir, to become a topographic
computer. Upon completion of that training I was sent to
Bavaria in Germany and was involved with extending the
2nd order geodetic control network there.
Upon return from active military, I made a career change
and began the process of the surveying internship
process to become eligible for licensure. To this end I
interned for the firm of Coulter & McCormack of Glens
Falls and Joseph LaFlure of Chestertown NY. Upon receipt
of my New York State Land Survey License in 1975, I
became registered to practice Land Surveying and opened
my own practice here in The Town of Minerva. My New York
State LS registration number is 049083.
Opening a new business is always a challenge and like
many in other practices, I found it necessary, from time
to time. to accept positions away from home and the
practice I started. Between these temporary positions
and while away, I did keep the practice open but on a
reduced and restricted operation.
I worked for the RBA Group in New York City for a
project they had on the Clearview Expressway. I also
worked for Massand Assoc. for a variety of projects in
the Metropolitan and Long Island area. The largest
project was the Jamaica RR station improvement. For both
the RBA Group and Massand, I was in a supervisory
position of field crews and office operations for the
various projects.
I also had three different positions at three separate
times in Saudi Arabia. The first, being for CTM Al Qwaiz,
in the Abba region, for electrical distribution. The
second was for the Saudi Electric Company (SCECO) in the
eastern province. This work for SCECO was related to
very high voltage transmission lines and substation
development and or expansion. The third was for Segia
Engineering Company and for them I was secunded to
Aramco for survey supervision with their pipe lines and
oil explorations. Unfortunately, it was also at this
time; Kuwait was invaded, so my time was also expended
in support of US military resistance to that invasion.
Following the conclusion of that action I decided it was
time to come home.
Throughout the time away, and while at home, work home
was primarily related to property lines. In addition to
the property line work I have had some interesting
involvement with other projects from as simple of laying
out a 200 meter ice oval to as complex in measuring and
re-measuring the deformation of a large and unsafe
structure. One of the major projects I was involved in
was the stake out of the new facility on Ruby Mt. for
the Barton Mines Corporation.
My survey career began with a transit and steel tape for
field operations and slide rule, log tables for
calculations and a drafting table for plotting maps.
Today I have Survey Grade GPS-GNSS collectors and
electronic Total Stations for field equipment and
computers for the calculations and large plotters for
the drafting effort. Times have changed!
I am an active member of the New York Association of
Professional Land Surveyors (NYSAPLS) and belong to the
Northern Association of that Group. |
